Tweakd is committed to operating in a sustainable, responsible manner and to driving up animal welfare standards within the business and among our suppliers. We base our approach to animal welfare on the Five Freedoms as defined by the Farm Animal Welfare Council. And, acknowledging that farm animals are sentient beings, we have also included a sixth Freedom recognising that good mental wellbeing and the ability to express species-specific behaviour must be accounted for:
- Freedom from hunger & thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain health and vigour.
- Freedom from discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from disease and injury - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to display normal behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
- Freedom from fear and distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
- Freedom to undergo positive experiences - by providing appropriate conditions to experience positive emotions and encourage natural behaviour.
We are also aware that our customers are increasingly concerned about how their food is sourced and as such we endeavour to continue improving the welfare of animals in our supply chain.
We are 100% free range across our entire egg supply.
Tweakd is committed to improving chicken welfare standards and has signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), thereby committing to meet or exceed the standards set out in the BCC by 2026 for 100% of the chicken in our UK supply chain.
We only use MSC labelled sustainable fish, and do not currently use fish that have been farmed due to concerns around overcrowding and excessive use of antibiotics.
We endeavour to use 100% sustainable and recyclable/reusable packaging. Unfortunately, as we provide frozen food, we have yet to find a way of keeping that food at the right temperature without using plastic ice packs, but these are widely recycled across the UK. We are currently investigating a better liner that is biodegradable that would allow us to do away with ice packs completely. The only single use packaging we currently use is the plastic film we use to seal the meals with. Again, we are working with partners to find a better solution, including corn starch, cellulose and sugar cane, but we are yet to find something that allows proper heat sealing and is them resistant to freezing. We will continue the search.
Allergens and Intolerances
We work really really hard to keep our meals as free from allergens as we can. Most of the meals we use are Gluten free as standard, we don’t use tree nuts or peanuts in our recipes and we don’t stock things like flour or breadcrumbs that could easily get blown around and contaminate a supposedly gluten free meal. (Yes, we do use breadcrumbs, but they’re Gluten-Free Panko breadcrumbs. Twice the price, but totally worth it.)
On our website you will be able to filter based on allergens and dietary preferences - it’s something we take really really seriously. That being said, we cannot operate a completely allergen free environment - we are not big enough to have huge, segregated areas with the kind of lab-grade airflow control you need to ensure that. In addition, we choose to only state what allergens our suppliers tell us their products do contain. We do not take ‘may contain’ statements, because too many suppliers and manufacturers use these without sufficient cause to cover their backs. Therefore, if you have a really really severe allergy, please do drop us a line at email@example.com and check in with us to ensure that what you want to order is absolutely safe for you. We do our best, down to parts per million analysis, to ensure it is. Thanks!
